As I began to read this third installment of the Mitchell’s Crossroads series, I was immediately wrapped in the loving arms of the Mitchell family. I enjoyed the light banter and family interactions in such a way that saw myself sitting at their dinning table or having heart to heart talks with Mama Mitchell. The family dynamic is definitely entertaining and enlightening.
The nod to Jane Austen’s “Emma” was noticeable as we see more of Emma’s “scheming” ways in an innocent effort to have those around her loved and cared for all the while denying her own heart. Somewhere around the one-third mark, it changed. The truth of Emma’s ways became more evident as feelings for her long time friend were more obvious (at least to me).
Now, time to get personal.
A Match for Emma is a great love story. But Pepper Basham put so many other things in it that I found myself trying to unpack all the pieces of wisdom for days after completion of the reading. Of course, minus the time I was sleeping. What I discovered was that I am Emma. This year was the year of many losses for me. Both in death and in life. The talk that Emma and her mother have about halfway through the book really grabbed me. It made me see that I had been burying myself in distractions and that I haven’t taken the time to grieve the loss of friendship, a mentor, and a family member. Even though everything she wrote were words of wisdom that I knew, and have shared with many people, it didn’t click in my own brain. I needed to take a step back and regroup. Then I needed to reconnect with my Lord. Only after that would things become clear and my heart would be free to move on. I love it when fiction reflects real life just enough to help the reader get through things. Don’t you?
Any way, thank you, Pepper Basham, for writing Emma’s story. It was truly life changing as well as entertaining.
