“The Governess of Penwythe Hall” is the quintessential Regency novel for anyone who is a fan of Jane Austen but also enjoys the tragic Gothic writings of the Bronte sisters. The Graythorne family was dark and dangerous while Jac Tretheway and his five nieces and nephews brought light and hope into the life of this victim of circumstance known as Mrs. Graythorne.

Delia’s desire for normalcy was understandable after so much heartbreak and living in fear of her past. You can’t help but feel bad for her as she chooses to live a life of servitude to this family. Her affections for those in her charge is simply heartwarming and when love does find her, you can’t help but cheer her on.

As for Jac, all I can say is — swoon! Who wouldn’t love a man who worked hard to provide and fought for his family?

Just for fun, in my mind, I saw each of this story’s male characters with the faces of some more classic leading men. For instance, a fairer version Heathcliff as Delia’s husband and brother-in-law. Jac was a bit more like Colonel Brandon. Her brother – well, I saw none other than Mr. Collins.
