Coffee with Yvonne M Morgan

It’s a chilly morning here in Michigan, so let’s take a little break with our favorite warm beverage, sit down with the authors we love, and get to know them better.

Today, I have Yvonne M Morgan visiting to talk about about her new book, Gypsy for God, what inspired the story as well as any advice she might have for aspiring writers.

Welcome to Back Porch Reads! Thank you for joining me, Yvonne. It is so lovely to chat with you.

It looks as though you have been writing for some time, yet you are new to me, so let me start by asking – What is the most difficult part about writing for you?

I struggle most with the editing. I do fine with creating the story, but once I go back and reread my words, I realize my words don’t come out the way I first expected. This discourages me to the point of wanting to give up on my writing. But then, I offer a prayer and keep going. Then I spend a lot of time rewriting and fixing problems.

This comforts my author ego. Editing is a struggle as well for me. It is so easy to get caught up in the story that one forgets to make sure everything is in order.

Many authors have little quirks or habits that show up while writing. What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I like to come up with the title for my work first. I find this helps me to keep focused on the purpose of the story. Then I develop a basic outline but I let the story to take me where it wants to go instead of my planning it all out. When I do this, I find some of my characters want to do their own thing. I have a cat in Gypsy for God and I forgot about him for a while. Then, one night, I woke up to the cat telling me not to forget him. So I had to go back and add some more scene with him in it. Writers can be a little crazy.

Isn’t it funny how that works? Speaking of Gypsy for God, what was the inspiration for the story?

A couple of things inspired me to write this story. First, I wanted to try my hand at writing fiction. And then I realized that all our travel fascinated many people, especially the trips for our mission trips. This led me to want to include lots of travel for my main character. Once I had those pieces, I wanted my main character to struggle with all the changes that come in life as we get older. These all came together to inspire the story.

I like it, sharing your life in a fictional way. What is the key theme and/or message in Gypsy for God?

The story offers hope to those readers seeking a godly purpose for their lives. A Gypsy for God shows how anyone can transform their lives and their world regardless of their situation or age. We are never too old or too for God to do incredible things for us and through us. And, in these days of increasing turmoil, I think hope is one of our most important messages that we can share with the world.

Amen to that!

Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share?

Yes, I started working on another non-fiction book. I think it will be a devotional that looks at fear through the lens of the Bible. And I think the subject of fear is something many of us struggle with in today’s world.

Fear is a tricky bug for sure, and it keeps us from walking in the fullness of God. I pray your pursuit of this topic brings you many moments of divine enlightenment.

Thank you again, Yvonne, for joining me today. I hope this tour blesses you. I look forward to seeing more from you.

      About the Author

As an award-winning author and blogger, I enjoy writing stories that deepen our relationship with God. My passions include prayer, travel, and mission work.

I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. My names include wife, mom, grandmother, and child of God. I learned to trust the Lord in all circumstances, even after the death of my son many years ago. Throughout the years, God’s calling led me down many paths, like starting a charity for orphans in other countries and becoming a writer.

      How I Started Writing

My writing career started differently than most. I never expected to write professionally. After many years of short-term mission work, I felt God nudging me to write stories from the mission field. I laughed because I thought I was too old and I was not a writer. The nudge would not go away. So, I asked God to speak through my husband if this was really Him and not my imagination. I told none of this to my husband. About a month later, Bill and I sat watching TV, and he looked over at me and asked how my book was coming along? I cried, and he asked what was happening and I told Bill the story, and he responded, “I guess you’re writing a book.”

I wrote my first book called Turning Mountains into Molehills. The book is a memoir of my experiences during those mission trips. I soon learned that there is a lot more than just putting the words on the pages. The hardest part came with the editing process, something I had not expected. As I reread my words over and over, I wanted to give up because it sounded dreadful. But I kept plugging away at the manuscript until it felt ready to submit to a publisher.

My book, Gypsy for God, came about for several reasons. I love to travel and I wanted to try writing a fiction novel, so I thought it would be fun to combine those two items. And since I did not start my writing career until I was in my fifties, I also wanted to show others it is never too late to try something new and we are never too old to be used by God to accomplish His purposes.

This book offers hope to those readers seeking a godly purpose for their lives. A Gypsy for God shows how anyone can transform their lives and their world regardless of their situation or age. We are never too old or too for God to do incredible things for us and through us. And, in these days of increasing turmoil, I think hope is one of our most important messages we can share with the world. Writing took me on an incredible journey and I hope it does not end soon.
